A Guide on How to Study

With all the improvements of technology, many of the students today have been exposed to countless choices of things from food to lifestyle. A type of gadget can have multiple brands to choose from. Anyone can choose their own hairstyle over the Internet. You can choose different entertainment channels. Everything today can give you myriad of choices which makes it impossible to choose correctly. Despite all these, some things never change. One of these is the way we SHOULD study.

I've read from how-to-study.com, about their guide questions on studying, which can be answerable by yes or no. If you answer yes to all of them, then you can be assured that you are in a correct place to study. I've made modifications to the explanations of each question to make it more appropriate for today's situation. Here are the questions:

Is my Study Place available to me whenever I need it?

The most important thing in studying is of course, having a place to study. You'd better be off to the library if you don't have one.
Is my Study Place free from interruptions?

It's not enough that you have your own private study place. It should be a place where you will not be disturbed by anyone around you for some petty things to do or pay attention to. It should be a place where no one will come in and tell you to do something else and just get back to what you are doing after. However little things these interruptions are, it will take time before you can get your focus back on your study.
Is my Study Place free from distractions?

Research shows that most students study best in a quiet environment. You can have your own room and table, but have a TV or Radio on. You may say that you study best with music, but your brain can only function that much. Focus is never simultaneous. Other distractions come in the form of an Internet connection to your PC or laptop where you are able to surf those social networking sites and read updates from your friends. You cannot concentrate on your studies when you are too eager and excited to read about the lives of others.
Does my Study Place contain all the study materials I need?

Among the things needed are pens/pencils, paper, and reference books. Sometimes, our references are not enough. This is why we make use of a computer to surf the net. However, the danger in this is that you might have been surfing for two hours and still not find what you are looking for. If you don't know how to use Google or Yahoo, then don't use the computer at all. It will only transform into a form of distraction for you. These tools are called Search Engines, where you have to be knowledgeable in using keywords related to your topic of interest. You cannot ask these Search Engines the way you ask your teachers or any human being. Your textbooks and your notebook are still the best reference you can use. Using the web is like looking for a needle in a haystack and identifying whether it is indeed a needle or just a pin.
Does my Study Space contain a large enough desk or table?

It is important to have a desk that is large enough to contain everything you need. If you don't have something like that, or if your table is small, then you have to have no things on top of that table except the one you need to read. Only ONE. You cannot read two books at the same time. However, if you have a large table, then make sure that you only have ONE material to read in front of you. Put the other materials in sequence at the other corner of the table.
Does my Study Place have enough storage space?

Storage can come in the form of a notebook, or a digital media. I recommend using the notebook. Make sure that you have a separate notebook for each of your subject matters. If not, then make sure that you have divided your notebook properly. If you cannot find the designated notebook for a particular subject within 30 seconds, then you have not created an appropriate notebook. Why do I recommend a notebook despite the existence of other forms such as laptop, iPhone, or any digital media? Well, one thing about a notebook is that you write to it. It's like putting what you have read in application. A notebook will not give you distractions more than what those digital media can. Can you play solitaire or chess or poker in a notebook? I don't think so.
Does my Study Place have a comfortable chair?

Choose the right chair to sit in. Not too high, not too low. Something that will not let you feel sleepy. Something that has a foam to make your butt comfortable, but doesn't contain too much of it like a couch where you can slouch and fall asleep.
Does my Study Place have enough light?

Not enough light in your study place will stress out your eyes sooner than you expect. Your eyes will exert more effort in trying to identify the characters in what you have been reading in a dim light compared to a well-lit place. Too much light is also not good. It will still stress your eyes. You will be feel sleepy with too much light.
Does my Study Place have a comfortable temperature?

If your Study Place is too warm, you might become sleepy. If it is too cold, your thinking may slow down and become unclear. If you are in an air-conditioned room, make sure that the temperature does not fall below what you are accustomed to. A room with a temperature of 16 degrees for me is not good, as I am from a tropical country--not used to cold weather.

11 year old girl gang-raped at Monteverde Street, Davao City

This is the worst news that I've heard about crimes involving minors. An 11 year old girl (orphan) was raped at a vacant lot at Monteverde Street, Davao City. She was stabbed and left there to die. However, it was not yet her time. She struggled to cross the street despite her stab wounds. She reached the front of a bank where an employee of DTI was able to see her. The security guard of the bank helped her. I was told that her woulds were serious that her internals can be seen by your naked eye. She struggled to keep it intact. They said that her blood was nearly drained. Apparently, her genital was inserted with a cola bottle. The girl recounted that she should have died at the vacant lot, but her mother waked her up. Upon reaching the bank, she was also ready to die, but again, her mother waked her up. It wasn't her time to die. My question is, would it have been better if she died? Justice will not be served because of the existing law that exempts criminal liability to persons below 15 years old. The four suspects have been identified: Mike, 16yrs old, Jerry, 11yrs old, John, 12yrs old, and Dennis, 12yrs old. They are now in custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). Three of them are below 15 years of age! How can justice be served? If that girl was your sister or your daughter, what would you have done? I really hope that our senators will do something about this. They have too much blood on their hands already, especially the proponent of this law!

SEC. 5. Rights of the Child in Cofict with the Law.
- Every cwd in conflict with the law shall have the following rights, including but not limited to:

(a) the right not to be subjected to torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment;

(b) the right not to be imposed a sentence of capital punishment or life imprisonment, without the possibility of release;

(e) the right not to be deprived, unlawfully or arbitrary, of his/her liberty; detention or imprisonment being a disposition of last resort, and which shall be for the shortest appropriate period of time;

(d) the right to be treated with humanity and respect, for the inherent dignity of the person, and in a manner which takes into account the needs of a person of his/her age. In particular, a child deprived of liberty shall be separated from adult offenders at, all times. No child shall be detained together with adult offenders. He/She shall be conveyed separately to or from court. He/She shall await hearing of his/her own case in a separate holding area. A child in conflict with the law shall have the right to maintain contact with his/her family through correspondence and visits, save in exceptional circumstances

(e) the right to prompt access to legal and other appropriate assistance, as well as the right to challenge the legality of the deprivation of his/her liberty before a court or other competent, independent and impartial authority, and to a prompt decision on such action;

(f) the right to bail and recognizance, in appropriate cases;

(g) the right to testify as a witness in his/her own behalf under the rule on examination of a child witness;

(h) the right to have his/her privacy respected fully at all stages of the proceedings;

(i) the right to diversion if he/she is qualified and voluntarily avails of the same;

(j) the right to be imposed a judgment in proportion to the gravity of the offense where his/her best interest, the rights of the victim and the needs of society are all taken into consideration by the court, under the principle of restorative justice;

(k) the right to have restrictions on hi/her personal liberty limited to the minimum, and where discretion is given by law to the judge to determine whether to impose fine or imprisonment, the imposition of fine being preferred as the more appropriate penalty;

(I) in general, the right to automatic suspension of
sentence;

(m) the right to probation as an alternative to imprisonment, if qualified under the Probation Law;

(n) the right to be free from liability for perjury, concealment or misrepresentation;

Student Researches

Yesterday we attended the Student Researches presentation at the University of Mindanao main campus at Matina. UM really has such a large campus and I can say that it's also nature friendly. You'll be healthy if you study there--no need to be hard on yourself to exercise, the campus does the job for you. I just hope they don't build too many buildings there.

Four schools were able to send representatives: Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU), University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC),
University of the Philippines - Mindanao(UPMin) and University of South Eastern Philippines (USEP). It was quite interesting how the student researches differ from one school to another. UP is as usual, very interesting with those nosebleed-causing terminologies. I learned much and reviewed much. I hope some time soon, an ICT education standards will be implemented in Mindanao where all schools will have more similarities in researches than differences.

It's quite interesting how we can get tons of information through the web. Much more with blogging. Well, paid blogging did not just give me additional income, it also informed me of knowledge that I would not have earned on my own. One example would be home based business. I have been thinking about this a lot. I think it has been years now and I still haven't thought of feasible home business ideas. I'm quite reluctant to visit those "secret to success" sites which often sell you books that don't even contain the least bit revelation to their riches. I've read Robert Kiyosaki's books and at first, I was really impressed. Rich Dad and Poor Dad had their different perceptions. Then I read Cash Flow Quadrant, Retire Young retire rich, and still did not quite get how to start the darn money-making facade. Well, at least I still got a few lessons learned. Still, I did not quite understand the "secret". Again, I got nothing to lose. Reading this things do help. I've yet to try another thing I saw on the Internet. It's called Plug-In Profit Site. Although I still haven't digested the marketing, I'm quite interested in this. Why is it called "Plug-In"? Is it like the paid link ads that you just "plug in" to your website? SSS Inquiry

I was really happy that SSS had their online inquiry where we can check our remittances via their website at http://www.sss.gov.ph. There were three problems however. One is that it takes months before the figures get updated. Second is that their website is too slow. The third problem is about security. You're only asked of your SSS number and your birth date and you can view contributions.
I re-visited the site a while ago and my initial feeling was disappointment. I was accustomed to inquiring by just placing in my SSS id and my birth date. They redesigned their site which now requires to register for a user name. Whoa I was furious because aside from the extra effort of signing up, the third problem mentioned a while ago was very much in effect. The site was still turtle-slow. Much worse, I need to wait for a confirmation email from them to get my password. I was pacified though when the email arrived 5 minutes later. Why was I pacified with the 5 minutes? Well, I expected the reply to arrive hours or even days later (don't ask why). Well at least one of the problems I mentioned above was fixed--Security (or so I think). Still, they need to work on the speed.

Wall-e

To keep myself from falling asleep, I watched Wall-E a while ago (well it's already 7:26 am here). The movie was nice. Imagine if you can plant a pizza tree lol. The early part made me feel nostalgic. I don't know about movies, but empty streets give me that feeling. It's not that I'm terrified by it, but it just feels familiar. I guess emptiness is just a part of me.

I kinda like to have my own wall-e robot. One who can survive on its own. It knows how to repair itself. It also knows how to charge itself through solar energy. It's a simple yet intelligent robot. But hell do I wish I know much about electronics and that money here is easy and prices were low. Well, if there's a will, there's a way right. I've downloaded an ebook about basics on electronics. I'll be studying it soon. 24 hours just seem short. Again, if there's a will there's a way.

Another food trip

After getting by going nuts over the Lenovo laptop cam, guess what? Another food trip! We went to Coco's grill. My goal was to eat the all-you-can-eat pizza. Bad news! No such menu! Grrr. Well, we ordered other great tasting menu. I ordered the menu that consists of a bread with soup inside (with a bunch of seafood). As usual, I forgot the name of the food. Damn I'm such an idiot. Next time, I'll be sure to take note of the menu. My colleagues ordered what looked like calamares. I was really fooled by it. I really thought that it was calamares and even commented on how to cook the squid to make it soft to eat. Those were onion rings! waaa. Again, another idiotic moment lol. At least I'm sure of one thing, the baby back ribs was delicious! And I'm sure that it was the right name of the menu, and I'm sure of the ingredients. Just arrived from going out with my college classmates. We had dinner at Siggi's Grill. It's located at 37A Mabini St. (Near Mabini-Torres junction, near Badminton World, near Tumble Tots. I think this is enough for you not to get lost). Thanks to blogie for blogging about this place. I discovered that it was owned by my classmate in MBA, Mr. Bervin. It was nice having been updated. I had a few minutes chat with Bervin and thanks to him, my wait was diminished (my college buddies had me waiting there for one and a half hour because they were lost waaa).

Damn I forgot what I ordered. I think it was called "Catch in the sea" which consists of garlic rice and a fish with really white and soft flesh soaked in margarine with a sprinkle of garlic (I think I'm being stupid with my descriptions. I don't know the name of the fish).

After dinner, we went to Kopi Roti for coffee and chat. There was this weird menu. Almost raw egg with soy sauce and something else. I like the kopi bun, but the egg was weird.

It was a great day. I had my activities planned out well. In the morning, I woke up not too early as there was nothing much to do. As usual, I turned the computer on and checked my email. Did a little coding and designing for this brochure that the other guy I asked to do so might not do. Got lazy doing it so I decided to post it here to gather some suggestions by which only one made a comment. Ate my lunch, took a bath, and took off for my masters class. I arrived at school on time 1:00 pm. Well at least I thought I was on time. On time for what? No one was there to have a class! Did I miss something? From what I remembered, our professor last Saturday said that we're going to have our exams "next Saturday". Well that day was "next Saturday". Damn I was so stupid. I knew that we're having classes every first and third Saturday and I took his word literally--"next Saturday". That day was the fourth Saturday. The "next Saturday" that he meant was the first Saturday next month! Well, remind me to just listen carefully. Listen and not just hear.

A very interesting movie. Makes me wonder if it would someday come true that bullets can be manipulated to move an angle. It's really cool! I mean, a lot of movies were unthinkable before but some of the concepts that were introduced have already come true. It's terrifying, but also interesting. I would want to be able to live when that day comes, but I do not wish to be caught up in the crossfire. I just want to be a spectator hehehe.

Hancock

Watched the movie Hancock yesterday. It was a great movie. I really love hero movies specially with good effects (seems like I haven't matured lol). One thing I noticed though is one inconsistency of the story. In the movie we were told that whenever Hancock and his ex-wife would come near to each other, they become mortals. When they're far from each other, they regain their power. What confused me is the time when Hancock was first hospitalized (the time he got amnesia). The ex-wife told the story that the time Hancock was awake, he did not know her (which tells us that he is conscious and both are still on a weak and fragile state). He however, also told the story that by the time he awakened, the doctors couldn't pierce him with the needles. Do these two different statements occur at different times? I just wonder.

The Olympics just started. It was a grand opening. For sure it cost a lot. Participants all over the world marched proudly. Everyone had their eyes on this event. Despite all the happy crowds and cheers, a war broke out amidst this peaceful parade: Georgia vs. Russia. The story was that Georgia, in its efforts to regulate rebel movements, made assaults in South Ossetia which unfortunately had many Russian citizens. Russia, knowing this, points out that they need to protect their citizens, and that those who harm them will not go unpunished. Will this be another cold war? What will it contribute to the world's economy? Those countries are large suppliers of oil. For sure, small countries such as ours will also suffer the consequences. See full story at yahoo.

Talking about ICT. A new ranking has been released by the World Economic Forum at http://www.weforum.org/pdf/gitr/2008/Rankings.pdf. According to their report, Denmark is still the most networked economy in the world (for 2 consecutive years). The report was subdivided into 4 parts:

What happened to India? I guess one of the reasons would be the language. The global economy would prefer communication between those with English-speaking entities with familiar accents than those who speak English but have their native accents dominating. Well, it's still not too late for those who want to transact with India. One alternative would be to acquire the services for Hindi translation. Get IAFL or any other translation company. After all, we can do business as long as we understand each other. :D.

Now we need credits

It's really amazing how money can be wiped out so easily. Specially with health problems. Just recently, my grandmother got hospitalized. It's nearly a month now. Our hospital bills skyrocketed. I don't know how we are going to get the money to pay for it. All I know is we need some credit or loan or something. We have exhausted all our credit cards. Maybe we should try the credit card offers online. Is this true? No annual fee? Hmmm... Maybe I should try to look for the Best Credit Card Offer. Or maybe I should just choose one from their Top 10 Credit Cards. Either way, We badly need credit right now...

First off let's try to know something about ZTE. Corporation is a global telecommunications equipment and network solutions provider based in China with regional offices in Asia, Africa, America and Europe. In the information written on wikipedia, the only legal controversy encountered by the company is Philippine National Broadband Network controversy.

About the Philippine National Broadband Network Deal
This was about the US$ 329.5 million contract for a national broadband network (NBN) that will improve government communications capabilities. The said deal will link all government offices online.

About the Philippine National Broadband Network Controversy
Last year (2007), a Filipino businessman in the name of Jose "Joey" de Venecia III, son of House Speaker Jose de Venecia, Jr., lost the bidding to ZTE and told senators that the ZTE proposal was overpriced by $130 million to accommodate kickbacks demanded by ex-elections commissioner Benjamin Abalos and the president's husband, Jose Miguel "Mike" Arroyo. About the Philippine Politics
Over the years, (or at least since the time I started to notice the world of Philippine Politics), any administration that was put into power has always had legal controversies. Since Marcos up to today, there has always been strong oppositions to their plans and actions. Marcos was ousted through people power. Aquino faced coup d etats. Ramos has always been criticized by his Vice President who was Erap. Erap was ousted again by another people power. Recently, the Arroyo administration is about to face the same fate. Series of controversies has plagued her leadership.

What do I think?

Well, many have judged the government far too quick. That's to be expected. Even without proper evidence and just succumbing to hearsays, they march to the streets and shout for justice. I wonder if they ever had concrete evidences as to their accusations. I don't blame them. I too have some doubts. However, I think there is more to this than just plain controversies. What I would like to know is "Are there other stakeholders involved (directly or indirectly)?" Do we really know the whole truth about these scandals? Are these people really acting on their personal interests or are they forced into it? Can ZTE corporation be really involved in this? (With this recent scandal as the only legal issue faced so far). If they have been doing this kind of business, how did they miss out on camouflaging this (If you're already good at it, why miss out and why on a third world country?) How do we know this isn't just a show?

Philippine Business

As for my first post, I would like to re-post something from my other blog. Philippine business is somewhat simple but complicated. The processes are well defined. Standards have been set. These should have made things a lot simpler. What then makes it complicated? Well, sad but true, some people running the offices may not be as reliable as we expected. Yeah you got it right--corruption, red tapes, etc. I really don't know how it started to plague this country. Although many people say its because of poverty. Well I don't agree. I have seen far too many people running the office and they are not poor. They have regular and above minimum wages. How come they still do what they are not supposed to do? To my opinion, I think it's because of the lifestyle they chose. They engage in responsibilities but are not even prepared for it. Some are just indolent (Yes indolent! I didn't want to agree with our previous colonizer but it is starting to be evident!). Sad to say, these people are often the first ones to go to the streets and complain of how their lives are miserable. Well back to our topic, if you want to engage in business here in the Philippines, we do have standard procedures. Please, don't encourage people to take shortcuts and read the following (the fees are as of 2007 and are subject to change):

How to register a business name

SINGLE PROPRIETORSHIP

Applicant must secure 2 copies of registration form and pay Php 300.00 (rate may change) for single proprietorship registration processing fee. The registration shall be valid for five (5) years. A surcharge of Php 100.00 is imposed if renewal is filed beyond the three (3) month grace period, counted from the date of expiration of certificate previously issued.

The duly accomplished application form must be filed with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Provincial Office, where the business is located, or the DTI-NCR Office or its satellite offices in case of Metro Manila based businesses.

Requirements:

The applicant must be of legal age(18 years or over)
Two (2) passport size pictures taken not more than one (1) year upon filing of application
If an alien, the applicant must submit the following:

Php 5,000.00 payment for Registration fee
Php 500.00 payment for filing fee
Alien Certificate of Registration (if any)
Accomplished DTI Form No. 16A for single proprietorship or 16B for juridical person. & No. 17 under R.A. No. 7042;
A written appointment of Filipino Resident Agent;
Authority to verify Bank Accounts
Proof of inward remittance of foreign currency (with peso conversion) for non-resident alien and Bank Certificate of Deposit for Resident Alien
Copy of valuation report from Central Bank if investment includes assets other than foreign exchange
Clearance from other involved agencies as Department of Science and Technology, Philippine National Police, etc.
In case of alien retailer, latest permit to engage in retail business per R.A. 1180 without the need to submit the requirements under number 3, except Alien Certificate of Registration

If the applicant has acquired Filipino citizenship by naturalization, election or by any other means provided by law, he must submit proof of Filipino Citizenship
Filipinos whose name are suggestive of alien nationality must submit proof of Filipino Citizenship (e.g. Birth Certificate, Voter's I.D., PRC, I.D.)(

CORPORATION/PARTNERSHIP

A juridical person already registered with the concerned government agency (i.e. Securities and Exchange Commission - SEC or Cooperative Development Authority - CDA, etc), and using only such registered name may no longer register with DTI under the Business Name Law.

However, if the juridical person chooses to adopt business name in practice of its business other than its corporate/partnership name, the adopted Business Name shall be registered with DTI.

Requirements:

Applicant must secure two (2) copies of registration form and pay Php 500.00 for the registration processing fee.
Accomplished DTI Form No. 16B
If the Corporation or Partnership is fully owned by an alien or the capital of which is more than 40% owned by aliens, the SEC Certificate must specify that it is in accordance with the Foreign Investment Act of 1991
In case there is an increase of capital, submit certificate issued by the SEC

Corporation, partnership, cooperatives using only its registered corporate, partnership, or cooperative names may no longer register under the Business Name Law.

An applicant who maintains a business with branches must register the main business and every branch thereof.

BUSINESS NAME RESERVATION

Businesses may reserve their business name online by accessing the Business Name Registration System (BNRS) site through http://www.business.gov.ph

Register your Business Name by completing the business applicant profile registration
When completing your application for registration online, there are certain items of information that are mandatory. If these items are left blank, you will receive an error message prompting you to complete them. Among these items are:

Tax Identification Number (TIN)
Email Address
Zip Code

In addition, if the business you are registering is a branch, a franchise or was acquired from a previous business, additional items such as exact business name of the franchise, main office and/or certificate number and date of registration of the acquired business are also required.
After you submit this application, a DTI business Name examiner will review it for completeness. Registration is not complete until a signed copy of the Transaction Reference Number (TRN) acknowledgment form is returned to DTI.
The completed application and correct fee can be paid at the DTI office indicated in your Transaction Reference Number (TRN) acknowledgment form.

Well, blogging has been a fad lately. Might as well go with the flow. I created this blogger account for one purpose: to critically evaluate different subject matters that may interest me. Anything and everything goes. Who knows? Maybe some people might benefit from this blog. Knowledge is free. Somehow, I can provide a little of it. :D
